About Us

Elsa Foundation is a non-profit charitable trust in India that focuses on the conservation of wildlife (which in turn enhances biodiversity and reduces the negative impact of climate change), prevention of cruelty to animals, rights of captive animals and welfare issues.

It opposes keeping wild animals in captivity and exploiting wildlife for commercial benefits.

We focus on mitigating human-elephant negative interactions by addressing problems from both sides (i.e. humans and elephants).

We have travelled to several countries to study best practices and implement them in India.

The foundation supports various government bodies in making informed policies and decisions on critical issues affecting biodiversity, human-wildlife negative interactions, and the rights of captive animals.

Our work areas are research, advocacy, awareness, publication and support in policy and decision-making.

The foundation’s name was kept in memory of the lioness Elsa, who lived in Kenya from 1956 to 1961.

Elsa is an icon and role model for the survival of captive wild animals that are released back into the wild.

Her life is a lesson that emphasises the importance of animals having the right to live freely.

Her legacy continues to inspire & motivate us all.
